Bible Study:

The Teachings and Commands of Jesus

By Bernie Koerselman

This section contains one Bible study.  It is the only Bible subject commanded to be taught and obeyed in Scripture -- the Teachings and Commands of the Lord Jesus Christ (see Matthew 28:20).

Unit 1 is a 12 week study course; Unit 2 is a 13 week study course; Units 3 is a 12 week study course; and Unit 4 is a 5 week study course.  All are designed with homework five days a week.

Each time we teach this class we prepare white notebooks (which we acquire from Costco) that have clear plastic covers.  We print Notebook Cover Sheets and put them behind the clear plastic of the front and back notebook covers.  We print the study material monthly which allows us to adjust the number of lessons printed for the changing class size.

A facilitator should lead a weekly meeting in which the week's lessons are reviewed and questions answered.  At this meeting our usual approach is to have the students take turns reading aloud the last week's lessons.  We take questions anytime, as they occur, then continue until all the material has been covered.  Usually the class period will take about 1 1/2 hours.  If anyone does not have his lesson completed he should not take part in reading through the lesson for the part that he has not completed.

The students should be strongly encouraged to do the homework each day until it is complete.  They should be discouraged from trying to do more than one day's material at a time.  The point is to learn the material and apply it to one's life.  It has to soak in a little at a time.  Students should be encouraged to write in the margins any questions they have for the weekly meeting.

Some recommendations:

I would encourage the facilitator of the weekly meeting to do the study day by day in the same way all the students are asked to do it each week.  In addition, the day of the weekly study, the facilitator should review the entire week's study material to have it fresh in mind for the weekly meeting.  The facilitator should make notes in the margins of any areas that deserve additional comment.  The facilitator should also make notes about whether the Scripture should be read or whether the reader should proceed directly into the lesson text and advise the reader.

You will likely find yourself shocked and amazed at what the Lord Jesus actually taught and commanded.  Soon you and your class will be hungering for more.  Your lives will be changed. As you incorporate these teachings and commands into your life, you will be increasingly conformed to the likeness of our Lord Jesus and learning to do the will of God (Matthew 7:2).
